I loved how the author wrote this book Starting as a little boy growing into a man the language thought process etc all evolved as he grew and you are right alongside him Despite the daily challenge of trying to navigate two very different worlds with parents who were limited in their ability to help Lac Su does not judge and in fact continues to strive to simply be loved especially by his father One can t help but be empathic to this boy his family friends and neighbors as a result of the honest portrayal of all It makes you realize that really very few of us make decisions with no motivation than to simply survive and ultimately find stability and happiness in this world regardless of your ethnic economic and social backgroundWithout spoiling the last part of the book I ll just say it s always amazing how so many children can push aside the pain and challenge of their childhood and move into adulthood then without warning one day all the old wounds are open and just as fresh as they day they were born And yet one goes on I admire Lac Su s courage and honesty and I hope he finds increasing love peace and happiness as he journeys through the rest of his life

A lot of Reviews have been created so I ll try hard to make my points short and relevantI chose this book due to it being an autobiography of a boy of a Vietnamese family soon to gain refugee status after fleeing their Communist MotherlandSeveral Vietnamese refugees fled their native land back in the late 1970 s The author was five years old at the time but this child left his home literally dodging machine gun fire due to an extensive political vice his father has with the Communist party This young boy left on a journey with a staunch memory of initially being one of the families to flee their homeland in this way by boat along with moving to different refugee camps in South East Asia until they finally found themselves on an airplane carrying themselves to a place known as Heaven America Yet unbeknownst to them Heaven was well over stated As per the norm government bureaucrats chose to relocate these people into a low sociological economic locationand that was of West Los Angeles CAThe author is no longer a young kid but rather turning into a baffling adolescent He is growing up in a neighborhood trying the best he can to survive street gangs and school as well as trying to escape explicit hostility which rages within his father All these ingredients are explosive enough to do him in but he somehow miraculously survives the tail end of his adolescent yearsThis autobiography reads nothing short at all of being a novel or even that of becoming a movie as much is to do with the aforementioned combined with coming from a loveless homeAfter the story is over inserted is a PS which includes an interviewer probing the author about his personal feelings now that he is an adult and no longer the adolescent boy portrayed in his story The depths of the book involve analytical sociological and anthropological aspects starting with his flee from Vietnam surviving refugee camps that of the iron fist ruling of his father and to the society of which he was placedOnce reaching the so called family journey of Heaven is discussed in this segment as well as throughout the book s entirety I feel that those ualities along with a strong lacking of love and a much desired need for it is what formulates this story and intrigues the readerThank you for sharing your intimate story with us Lac Su

I Love Yous Are For White People by Lac Su is a raw and riveting look into the author s life of being raised in an Asian household in America Lac Su s descriptive writing takes you in the moment and twists your heart inside out He spares no harsh detail and does not censor anything He wants his readers to feel what he felt while growing up and he does this through his simple yet artistic way with wordsThe story he tells puts his readers there as if you are in the room with him This is a story about a father and son the relationship he has with his father and the lack of feeling self worth because of how he was treated by a father he initially looked up to as a young boy While many of the scenes brought tears to my eyes pain in my heart shock to my soul and even anger there were also a few laugh out loud moments I found this book to be a testament to survival and resiliency of the human heart I also found Lac s memoir to be a sort of therapeutic lesson for himself The process of revisiting painful and humiliating memories had to be nothing short of difficult At the same time old wounds have to sometimes be cleaned out again to break up the old scar tissue so that healing can once again take placeThis book was not only written for us to take a glimpse at what life was like in an Asian household but also to clearly raise awareness to the fact that a parent or parents can really have a large influence and affect on their children I am grateful to Lac for writing his story because it has touched me in so many ways and it made me think deeply about the conseuences of harsh discipline and the withholding of love toward your children
