A really outstanding job by Vertical Seeing as this is a reprint of an older series that is fairly well known I won t focus on the uality of story itself Instead I ll just give a few uick words about uality of the printing and translationThe paper uality and overall uality of the physical book itself is really impressive the paper feels fantastic to the touch and no details are lost due to shoddy printing uality The translation is serviceable at the worst some of latinization of names are a bit uestionable particularly the accepted Killy becoming Kyrii but otherwise very well doneOverall very happy with the job done here I strongly recommend fans of the series or of Nihei s art and writing to strongly consider picking this up

FINALLY got my hands on this thing I have been a devoted fan of Tsutomu Nihei ever since I picked up the first book of Biomega a few years ago After devouring that series it s still my favorite and the succeeding Knights of Sidoni I tried to track down his original but now out of print Blame but I found the cost of these rare editions to be prohibitiveThankfully the publisher was aware of this problem and decided to reissue the whole thing in it s entirety in these massive actual size omnibus editions As far as I can tell there will be three of which this is the first And what a beginning it is It s got everything I love about Nihei comics fantastic organic artwork blistering action and almost no dialogue backstory or context That s not to say it is hard to understand just mysterious and interesting I love it Of course I will buy all of these I am left with only one uestion Do you think the main characters mighty handgun is in any way inspired by the Noisy Cricket from Men in Black The world may never know Desperately Seeking Someone Life Goes On Desperately Seeking Someone #2 years ago After devouring that series it s still my favorite and the succeeding Knights of Sidoni I tried to track down his original but now out of print Blame but I found the cost of these rare editions to be prohibitiveThankfully the publisher was aware of this problem and decided to reissue the whole thing in it s entirety in these massive actual size omnibus editions As far as I can tell there will be three of which this is the first And what a beginning it is It s got everything I love about Nihei comics fantastic organic artwork blistering action and almost no dialogue backstory or context That s not to say it is hard to understand just mysterious and interesting I love it Of course I will buy all of these I am left with only one uestion Do

Manga isn t exactly associated with good writing so I didn t go in expecting a great deal from it story wise If you want to pick this up do so for the architecture of the setting it is fantastic and bleak and interesting The group designs for the Administration Silicons etc are all uite nice Aside from that there is very little to enjoy It comes across as the artists wanting to draw some interesting scenery and then linking it together with the vague thread of a narrative which acts as a thread by which all the expected cliches and tropes are linkedProtagonist is generic Broody Mcuietpants with an overpowered gun looking for a McGuffin in an inexplicably hostile world He wonders around a bit some contextless violence happens he wanders off to the next scene Rinse repeatHe is apparently a mostly generic human aside from the pistol o doom but can inexplicably sustain easily fatal damage including falling from huge heights being shot high force cranial impacts with and solid objects and limb removal which should induce fatal blood loss within minutes None of this actually seems to impact him in the slightest and he is able to remain a nonchalant standing posture while holding a conversation in the midst of extreme physical traumaSuspension of disbelief only stretches so farNaturally if he ever does arrive in a very brief tight spot from which he can t shoot his way through deus ex machina happens and everything is fine If he does find himself in a disadvantageous situation he gets out of it within the space of a few panels You re never actually asked to get invested in the story despite the ostensibly numerous threats of the world the protagonist is never in danger and there s no time for a sense of drama to developI would have been invested had any of the scenes or dialogue hinted at or foreshadowed something larger That however would seemingly be pushing the boundaries With the silent protagonist you might get from actions than from words Nope Perhaps the intent is to dwell on the isolation and alienation of the setting Sign me up Nope Despite the freuent suggestions of awesome scale comparative scarcity of life etc the atmosphere never really gets where it seems to suggest that it s goingFrom a scenery art perspective it s fantastic From a writing prspective the author has no idea what they re doing
