I have been wanting a book on titling for film for a long time When it comes to movies I have always been amazed on creative titling and what I m going to tell you right now is that if Creative Motion Graphic Titling for Film Video The Web has caught your attention the first thing I want you to ask you isa Are you looking for a book with step by step instructions on how to create similar titling like what you see from the big budget filmsb You are looking for a titling book that goes into the concept of titling how its been used throughout history today and giving examples of the traditional and non traditional methods of accomplishing themIf you are the latter then this book is for you If you are for the former there are books out there that really get into the nitty gritty for motion graphics for specific softwareAs I was reading this book thoughts that went into my head was how awesome this book would be if it was used in an academic setting of maybe not so much of how to create them but learning the basics of how titling is applied to films in the past and today and also ideas and mistakes that people can makeI enjoyed the presentation by Braha and Byrne and the ideas of how some of the titles were created for awesome films that I have enjoyed and were presented in this bookIn this book you will find case studies by Yuco s Synderela Peng creating the titles for Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and the challenges they faced one of my favorite studios in creation of titling is MK12 and discussing the titling creation of uantum of Solace The Kite Runner and my favoriteStranger than Fiction and many case studies And along with case studies are also interviews with professionals in the industryThe book is broken down to the following chaptersCHAPTER 1 Title Seuence Function with Form Learning about Title Seuence Style Integration and Transitions Opening and Closing Titles and CHAPTER 2 A Brief History of Title Seuences Learning a little about title seuencing from classic films such as North by Northwest Dr Strangelove etcCHAPTER 3 The Essentials of Typography and Time Moving Type Types of Type Readability etcCHAPTER 4 Lights Color and Clarity Preparing Your Titles Using Photoshop Choosing between Raster and Vector Understanding Color etcCHAPTER 5 Importing Text and Other Files Into After EffectsCHAPTER 6 Title Seuences in Production The Camera and the EditCHAPTER 7 Sound in Movie TitlesCHAPTER 8 Essential Techniues Featuring tutorials BasicCHAPTER 9 Famous Movie Title Techniues Sopranos Star Wars Se7en Saw The Matrix The Dawn of the Dead Lost Spider Man etc examplesCHAPTER 10 Completing the Creative Process Planning Timing Workflow etcAlso included is a CD which include completed tutorial examples featured inmov format and project elements and files to experimentJUDGMENT CALLOverall I felt that Creative Motion Graphic Titling for Film Video The Web was a very good book and that is to introduce people to various styles of titling For me I own hundreds of films on Blu ray and thousands on DVD and each time I find a special feature that goes into titling for me I m always wanting to know the idea the concept and the challenges that these studios had in creating these titles And I found it pretty cool that Yael Braha and Bill Byrne actually had similar taste of the titles that I enjoy and did interviews and case studies with these studiosWhile a book that does cover the basics for those who want of the basics of the actual program there are parts of the book that assume you are Adobe proficient If you are this book will be easy to follow but if you aren t and have no idea what Photoshop or Illustrator is let alone what is Adobe Premiere and what is Final Cut Pro and don t know what font or typeface is I recommend experimenting via Adobe s Classroom in a Book or other books that go into the early basics of terminology and function of the softwareAnd then you can jump into this book and if you want to learn how to create basic titles or something similar to The Matrix Star Wars or Lost then you can jump into this bookIn fact even for those who are just wanting to know about one s career in creating graphic titles this book works as well because there are case studies interviews that go into that as wellThis is one of those books that will be subjective to what one wants to learn and for me I was not looking for a step by step how to book There are other books that do a great job of focusing on the software I was looking for of the creative side of creating titling and hoping to learn from various professionals in the industry of their approach to titling for films that I love and you get some of that in this book but also get a little of the how to s as wellSo if what I described in this book is what you re looking forthen by all means give it a try

This book tries to do too many things and doesn t succeed It s good for a total novice as an overview of the creative process and various tools and techniues used in production but it s grossly lacking on in depth detail and substantive tutorials If you are looking for a hands on technical book that shows you how to accomplish amazing effects or reproduce famous ones skip this Most of the book is needless padding and the remainder of the tutorials just whizzes by at breakneck speed with about a page devoted to each effect Instead it is filled with unnecessary background filler like the creative process the concept pitch and storyboarding then goes on to aspect ratios a history of titles typography kerning leading I don t want to read about the history of the Western alphabet color theory or serif fonts and fixed width fonts It explains x height stroke weight faux italics even uppercaselowercase This is how basic the book is If you need this kind of basic level introduction to concepts and terminology you are not ready for After Effects Cinema 4D Illustrator or FlashIt promises Creative Motion Graphic Titling for Film Video and the Web but really doesn t deliver very well on most of those claims I m a web developer and animator so I can speak to the web portion most There s a lot you can do with Flash either using it alone to do animation either vector raster or both or incorporating outside video Sadly the entirety of this discussion is confined to a paltry 4 or 5 pages It shows you how to make an object convert it to a symbol then do a motion tween This is all on one page with no explanation behind what those major concepts are To someone who s never done this this is about as enlightening as Morse Code is to a mountain gorilla Animating in Flash is in itself the subject of an entire bookWhile at MTV I saw how a real world motion graphics team worked The major workhorses in our video department were Adobe After Effects Photoshop Final Cut Pro Cinema 4D Maya and a few other software tools This book does a terrible job of demonstrating the workflow and how different programs come together in the final product The discussions on Photoshop and After Effects should ve taken up the majority of this book but instead are a mere few chaptersThe book makes freuent reference to successful title seuences like the intro s mention and copious screenshots of Building Britain It s not very useful to see pages of still images when talking about moving images and animation effects Sadly the CD that comes with the book include none of the famous seuences or dissections of how they were made Instead they are filled with short 2 3 second imitated versions of seuences that are not so impressive There s no video tutorial By contrast other technical books like my
