This was a pretty good book and a great look into the modern jockey s life and hardships They are much the same as in past times but haven t stopped being movingIf you re looking for an inside look at Barbaro though you re not really going to get much of one Prado didn t really spend all that much time with Barbaro which wasn t his fault He knew better than anyone except Brett what it was like to ride him but that s about allStill it s an interesting perspective and I thought it a worthwhile read

The story is no less sad for being well known This account of Barbaro s career recuperation and death is written by his jokey Edgar Prado along with the sportswriter John EisenbergIt s not the most well written book and certainly can t hold a candle to Laura Hillenbrand s Seabiscuit but it s an easy uick read In that sense it reminds me of all the horse books I lived through vicariously as a kid Along with the basic Barbaro narrative Prado describes his own life including his childhood in Peru Little is new here other than Prado talking about himself but the story is compelling enough to carry the dayThe best piece I ve read about Barbaro however remains Buzz Bissinger s outstanding article in the August 2007 issue of Vanity Fair However you access it Barbaro s story raises serious uestions about the racing industry And it serves as a reminder of why you should never fall in love with a horseand why you can t help it
