I think I have a fairly strong will but I wasn t able to finish this book and deleted it from my kindle I would never buy another book by this author She comes across as extremely arrogant and condescending particularly in regard to people who lived in previous eras As another reviewer stated her writing style is baffling with bizarre statements that seem out of place The heavy use of slang and informal language made it intolerable You are writing a book to be read by the general public not sending a text to your buddies Did someone edit this bookOne of these poorly thought out statements was that Columbus sailing west was moronic because he would hit the Americas and China first instead of India right after stating that people living at that time hadn t mapped the world yet Then how could they have knownLater in the book she discusses the spice nutmeg and refers to disgusting salmonella laden drinks with no further explanation What Weird stuff like this comes out of nowhereI was under the impression that this book was about the history of jewelry and gemstones but the part I read was mostly the author complaining about the diamond company De Beers and the Dutch purchasing Manhattan Island for some glass beads I guess I was expecting facts and less of the author s often bizarreunseemly remarks
